ABSTRACT

Abstract Blueberry is an important fruit crop, with many health benefits. Despite its importance, much remains to be studied concerning the dormancy dynamics in rabbiteye cultivars growing in a mild winter climate. In this research, the dormancy in blueberry, rabbiteye cultivars 'Bluegem', 'Climax', 'Delite', and 'Powderblue', was studied in a mild winter region. The single-node cuttings biological test and the evaluation of the hydric status were performed in dormant winter reproductive buds. These experiments were performed during fall and winter in one year (2016). Moreover, chilling hours under or equal to 7.2 ºC were measured, and chill units were calculated according to Utah Model [1], Modified Utah Model [2], and Blueberry Model [3]. In conclusion, the four cultivars showed a similar pattern, revealing a dormant state in the initial sampling dates and a released dormancy in the final treatments, showing the decrease of dormancy in June and July. However, Delite was earlier than the other cultivars. Bluegem and Delite required 134.0 chilling hours, 127.0 chill units (Utah Model), 198.5 chill units (Modified Utah Model), and 971.5 chill units (Blueberry Model) for 50% of their green tip buds reach the opened bud stage. Climax required 44.0, -11.0, 56.5, and 440.5, respectively. And Powderblue required 44.0, 5.5, 77.0, and 725.0 respectively. This study can bring some insights into crop management and production of this important fruit crop, especially in a global climate-changing scenario, related to flowering and dormancy control, as well as helping to select suitable cultivars to a region, concerning chilling requirements.

ABSTRACT

Background:Vaccinium meridionale produces fruits with a high content of anthocyanins and polyphenols with great antioxidant capacity. Objective: produce vinegar from V. meridionale alcoholic beverages and to determine the content of bioactive antioxidant compounds, antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxic activity on colorectal cancer cells. Methods: Wine and vinegar samples were obtained by fermentation of V. meridionale berries juice, using three extractive processes: mechanical maceration (MAC), preheating to 80°C (CAL) and a combination of both (MIX). During acetic fermentation, titratable acidity and acetic acid content were evaluated. Fermentation progress was recorded and compared by measuring the antioxidant potential by DPPH, FRAP, and ORAC. Polyphenols, anthocyanins and hydroxycinnamic acids were quantified. Finally, the antiproliferative activity of vinegar was evaluated in SW480 colon cancer cells. Results: In acetic fermentation, yield and productivity were independent of extraction, indicating that they do not affect the biotransformation of alcohol into vinegar. The alcoholic beverages showed the highest antioxidant activity; after acetic fermentation, a decrease in antioxidant potential was observed in all three extractive processes evaluated. The different vinegar obtained by CAL and MIX, showed the highest values of antioxidant activity, polyphenols, and anthocyanins. The inhibition of the antiproliferative activity of vinegar was dose-dependent and showed an IC50 of 536 µg/mL. Conclusions: The vinegar prepared from V. meridionale berries presented an outstanding antioxidant and antiproliferative activity. The reason is the contents of bioactive compounds and their antioxidant power, which may contribute to chemoprevention in secondary cancer prevention.


Antecedentes: Vaccinium meridionale produce frutos con alto contenido en antocianinas y polifenoles con elevada capacidad antioxidante. Objetivo: Producir vinagre a partir de bebidas alcohólicas de V. meridionale y determinar el contenido de compuestos bioactivos antioxidantes, capacidad antioxidante y actividad citotóxica sobre células de cáncer colorrectal. Métodos: Muestras de Vino y vinagre fueron obtenidas mediante fermentación del jugo de V. meridionale, usando tres procesos extractivos: maceración mecánica (MAC), precalentamiento a 80 °C (CAL) y una combinación de ambos (MIX). En la fermentación acética fueron evaluadas la acidez titulable y el contenido de ácido acético. Se registró y comparó la evolución de la fermentación midiendo el potencial antioxidante por DPPH, FRAP y ORAC. Se cuantificaron los polifenoles, antocianinas y ácidos hidroxicinámicos. Finalmente, la actividad antiproliferativa del vinagre fue evaluada en células de cáncer de colon SW480. Resultados: En la fermentación acética, el rendimiento y la productividad fueron independientes de la extracción indicando que no afectan la biotransformación del alcohol en vinagre. Las bebidas alcohólicas mostraron la mayor actividad antioxidante, después de la fermentación acética se observó una disminución del potencial antioxidante en los tres procesos extractivos evaluados. Los vinagres obtenidos por CAL y MIX, presentaron los mayores valores de actividad antioxidante, polifenoles y antocianinas. La inhibición de la actividad antiproliferativa del vinagre fue dosis dependiente y mostró un IC50 de 536 µg/mL. Conclusiones: El vinagre preparado a partir de bayas de V. meridionale presentó una excelente actividad antioxidante y antiproliferativa debido al contenido de compuestos bioactivos y poder antioxidante que puede contribuir a la quimioprevención en la prevención secundaria del cáncer.

ABSTRACT

El objetivo de la investigación fue caracterizar y comparar 5 variedades comerciales de arándano y una especie nativa. Para lo cual, las muestras comerciales fueron adquiridas de supermercados de la ciudad de Trujillo y la especie nativa fue recolectada del Distrito de Sonche (Centro Poblado Olmal). Se determinó humedad, acidez, sólidos solubles totales (SST), materia seca, peso, proteína, grasa, cenizas, pH, actividad antioxidante y aceptación con 30 panelistas sin entrenamiento. Las variedades comerciales Biloxi, Misty y Emerald fueron las que alcanzaron los más altos resultados en características fisicoquímicas: humedad, acidez, SÓLIDOS solubles totales, peso, proteína, pH, a diferencia del contenido de: fibra, cenizas, grasas y energía donde la especie nativa sobresalió, superando en valores a las variedades comerciales. Los índices más altos de actividad antioxidante lo alcanzaron las variedades Biloxi, Misty y Emerald. Las variedades con la mejor aceptación fueron Misty y Biloxi alcanzando un puntaje de 8, a diferencia de las otras variedades que obtuvieron un puntaje de 7 al igual que la especie nativa.

ABSTRACT

Background: Andean berry (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) is a native Colombian berry with potential health benefit comparable to cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), both rich in phenolic compounds with a wide range of biological activities. Objectives: to evaluate the effect of Andean berry consumption on blood biochemical parameters (lipid profile and glucose), anthropometric parameters (body weight, waist circumference, body mass index or BMI) and blood pressure of overweight adults. Methods: glycemia, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and total triglycerides in blood serum, body weight, size and waist perimeter, and blood pressure were analyzed in 25 overweight adults at day 1 and 21 after consumption of 35 g/day of osmodehydrated Andean berry. Results: a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure (10%, p = 0.0388), systolic blood pressure (6%, p = 0.0400), BMI (1.7%, p = 0.0306), weight (2%, p = 0.0388) and waist circumference (4.1%, p = 0.0052) were observed in the participants who completed the study. However, the lipid profile did not have a significant effect, the glycemia increased significantly (6.9%, p = 0.0004). Conclusions: the results of the present study suggest that the regular consumption of Andean berry treated by osmotic dehydration is a food that may help control weight and blood pressure; however, it requires another type of osmotic agent to prevent the increase of glycemia.


Antecedentes: Agraz (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) es una baya nativa colombiana con potencial beneficio en la salud comparable al arándano (Vaccinium macrocarpon), ambas ricas en compuestos fenólicos con amplio rango de actividades biológicas. Objetivo: evaluar el efecto del consumo de agraz osmodeshidratado en parámetros bioquímicos sanguíneos (perfil lipídico y glucemia), antropométricos, (perímetro de cintura, índice de masa corporal o IMC) y presión arterial en adultos con sobrepeso Métodos: se analizaron los parámetros glucosa, colesterol total, colesterol-LD, colesterol-HDL, triglicéridos totales en suero, peso, talla y perímetro de cintura, y presión arterial de adultos con sobrepeso al inicio y 21 días después de consumir 35g de agraz osmodeshidratado/día. Resultados: se observó en los participantes que completaron el estudio una reducción significativa en la presión arterial diastólica (10%, p = 0,0388) y sistólica (6%, p = 0,0400), así como en el índice de masa corporal (1,7%, p = 0,0306), peso (2%, p = 0,0388) y perímetro de cintura (4,1%, p = 0,0052). Sin embargo, en el perfil lipídico no tuvo efecto significativo, aunque si aumentó significativamente el valor de la glicemia (6,9%, p = 0,0004). Conclusión: los resultados del presente estudio sugieren que el consumo regular de agraz tratado por deshidratación osmótica es un alimento que ayuda al control del peso y presión arterial, sin embargo requiere otro tipo de agente osmótico para evitar el aumento de la glicemia.

ABSTRACT

El Agraz (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz), es una baya que posee alta capacidad antioxidante debido a su contenido de compuestos polifenólicos como antocianinas, ácidos fenólicos y flavonoides. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la composición proximal inicial y el efecto en las características fisicoquímicas (pH, °Brix, acidez titulable (AT)), actividad antioxidante y antiproliferativa de néctares elaborados a partir de agraz liofilizado, almacenados du- rante 42 días. Se prepararon dos néctares: NA (sacarosa) y NB (aspartame), se evaluó cambio en pH, °Brix y AT cada7días durante el almacenamiento. Se determinó contenido de fenoles y antocianinas totales mediante Folin-Ciocalteau y método diferencial de pH, respectivamente, actividad antioxidante mediante FRAP y ORAC. Se analizó la actividad antiproliferativa con sulforodamina B en células SW480 (adenocarcinoma de colon). Los resultados mostraron que ambos néctares presentaron estabilidad en °Brix, pH yAT y el NB presentó menor aporte calórico. El contenido de fenoles totales aumentó durante el almacenamiento. El contenido de antocianinas y capacidad antioxidante se redujo significativamente (p<0,05). NA presentó mejor actividad antiproliferativa a las 72h, con un porcentaje de inhibición del crecimiento celular a una concentración de 1g/mL de 63,50% (IC50=0,6g/mL). Se puede concluir que NA presentó mayor capacidad antiproliferativa y NB mejor actividad antioxidante, que aunque disminuyó significativamente durante el almacenamiento, continuó siendo alta comparada con estudios reportados en la literatura. Para productos realizados a partir de bayas del género Vaccinium. Se requieren estudios adicionales “in vivo” que permitan comprobar su eficacia quimiopreventiva y dilucidar mecanismos moleculares de acción para beneficio de la salud humana, demostrando su potencial funcional descrito hasta ahora “in vitro”(AU)


Effect of storage time on the physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant and antiproliferative nectar of unripe (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz). Agraz (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) is a berry that has high antioxidant capacity due to its content of polyphenolic compounds as anthocyanins, phenolic acids and flavonoids. The aim of this study was to evaluate the initial proximal composition and the effect on the physicochemical characteristics (pH, ° Brix, titratable and acidity (TA), antioxidant and antiproliferative activity of nectars made from unripe lyophilized and stored for 42 days. Two nectars were prepared: NA (sucrose) and NB (aspartame), was evaluated change in pH, °Brix and AT every 7 days during storage. It was determined and total phenols content by Folin-Ciocalteu anthocyanins and pH differential method, respectively, antioxidant activity by FRAP and ORAC. Antiproliferative activity with sulforhodamine B in SW480 cells (colon adenocarcinoma) were analyzed. The results showed that both were stable nectars ° Brix, pH and changes in AT. The NB has lower calories. The content of total phenols increased during storage. The anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity was significantly reduced (p <0.05). NA presented better antiproliferative activity at 72 h, with a percentage of inhibition of cell growth at a concentration of 1g / ml of 63.50% (IC50 = 0.6 g/mL). It can be concluded that NA had a higher antiproliferative capacity and NB better antioxidant activity than even decreased significantly during storage, remained high com- pared to studies reported in the literature. Further studies "in vivo" to verify their chemopreventive efficacy and elu- cidate molecular mechanisms of action for the benefit of human health, showing their functional potential described so far "in vitro" are required(AU)

Antecedentes: Los arándanos y productos de arándano tienen alto valor nutricional, especialmente por su alto contenido de antocianinas. Estas son potentes antioxidantes y poseen alta capacidad de secuestrar radicales libres. Así, los arándanos y productos de arándanos han resultado atractivos para los consumidores interesados en alimentos funcionales. Sin embargo, los tratamientos térmicos y posterior almacenamiento de productos alimenticios influyen en el contenido de antocianinas. La cinética de degradación de las antocianinas puede ser evaluada desde una perspectiva termodinámica, basada en funciones como energía libre, entalpía, entropía y energía de activación. Objetivos: Se estudió el efecto de la pasteurización y la estabilidad de antocianinas presentes en jugos de arándanos, sin pasteurizar y pasteurizados, durante el almacenamiento. Métodos: Jugos de arándanos sin pasteurizar y pasteurizados fueron almacenados a -18, 0, 5 y 10°C durante 148 días. A intervalos de tiempos se cuantificó la concentración de antocianinas monoméricas totales. Se realizó un Análisis de Componentes Principales y los resultados experimentales se ajustaron a modelos cinéticos de orden cero y uno, y a los modelos de Arrhenius y Eyring. Resultados: La pasteurización provocó disminución del 28,5% en la concentración inicial de antocianinas monoméricas totales, mientras que para todas las temperaturas estudiadas, la disminución de antocianinas en función del tiempo de almacenamiento siguió una cinética de primer orden. En el jugo sin pasteurizar, la constante de velocidad de degradación varió entre 0,0080 - 0,0084 días-1 y el tiempo de vida media, entre 75 - 87 días. En el jugo pasteurizado, la constante de velocidad de degradación varió entre 0,0023 - 0,0060 días-1 y el tiempo de vida media, entre 116-301 días. En éste la energía de activación, la energía libre de Gibbs, entalpía y entropía de activación fueron 44,66 kJ/mol, 83,80 kJ/mol, 42,35 kJ/mol y -139,09 J/mol.K, respectivamente". Conclusiones: El tratamiento de pasteurización provocó disminución del 28,5% en la concentración de antocianinas monoméricas totales iniciales de los jugos de arándano. La estabilidad de las antocianinas durante el almacenamiento fue mayor en los jugos pasteurizados, siendo mayor cuando se almacenaron a 0°C; mientras que en los jugos pasteurizados almacenados a -18°C las antocianinas mostraron menor estabilidad.


Background: The blueberries and blueberry products has great nutritional value, primarily because it has high anthocyanin content. Anthocyanins are potent antioxidants and have high radical-scavenging activities. Thus, the blueberry and blueberry products has become very appealing to consumers interested in functional foods. However, the anthocyanins content is affected by heat treatment and subsequent storage. The kinetics degradation of anthocyanins can be evaluated from a thermodynamic perspective, based on activation functions such as free energy, enthalpy, entropy and activation energy. Objectives: pasteurization effect and anthocyanins stability were studied during storage of pasteurized and nonpasteurized blueberries juices. Methods: Pasteurized and non-pasteurized blueberries juices were store at -18, 0, 5 and 10°C during 148 days. Total monomeric anthocyanins concentration was quantified at different times. Principal Components Analysis was performed and experimental results were adjusted to zero and first-order kinetic models as well as to Arrhenius and Eyring ones. Results: A decrease in total monomeric anthocyanins original concentration was 28.5 % due to pasteurization while for all temperatures studied, the reduction followed a first-order kinetic during storage. Degradation rate constant varied between 0.0080 - 0.0084 days-1 and half-life, 75 - 87 days for non-pasteurized juices, whereas these parameters were among 0.0023 - 0.0060 days-1 and 116 - 301 days, respectively for pasteurized ones. Activation energy was 44.66 kJ/mol while Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy were 83.80 kJ/ mol, 42.35 kJ/mol and -139.09 J/mol. K respectively, for the latter juices. Conclusions: Pasteurization caused in a 28.5 % loss of initial total monomeric anthocyanins. Anthocyanins stability was higher in pasteurized blueberries juices and resulted even bigger when store at 0°C, while in pasteurized juices stored -18 ° C were less stable anthocyanins.

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to evaluate the pharmacological effects of Vaccinium bracteatum Thunb. methanol extract (VBME) on microglial activation and to identify the underlying mechanisms of action of these effects. The anti-inflammatory properties of VBME were studied using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells. We measured the production of nitric oxide (NO), inducible NO synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) as inflammatory parameters. We also examined the effect of VBME on intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the activity of nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65). VBME significantly inhibited LPS-induced production of NO and PGE₂ and LPS-mediated upregulation of iNOS and COX-2 expression in a dose-dependent manner; importantly, VBME was not cytotoxic. VBME also significantly reduced the generation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. In addition, VBME significantly dampened intracellular ROS production and suppressed NF-κB p65 translocation by blocking IκB-α phosphorylation and degradation in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Our findings indicate that VBME inhibits the production of inflammatory mediators in BV-2 microglial cells by suppressing NF-κB signaling. Thus, VBME may be useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases due to its ability to inhibit inflammatory mediator production in activated BV-2 microglial cells.

Antecedentes: numerosos estudios han analizado la capacidad antioxidante de los arándanos. Considerando la citotoxicidad de las radiaciones ionizantes, mediada por radicales libres, es imperativo el análisis de fitocompuestos con efecto mitigante potencial. Objetivo: evaluar las propiedades radio-protectoras de de los arándanos, en relación con el daño genético inducido por rayos X. Materiales y métodos: el diseño experimental tuvo dos etapas: primero se ejecutó ensayo in vitro con diez muestras de sangre periférica de mujeres jóvenes no fumadoras. Cada muestra fue analizada mediante Ensayo Cometa en el siguiente grupo de tratamientos: control negativo, tratamiento con arándanos (0,232 mG/mL), irradiación con 4 Gy y tratamiento simultáneo arándanos/irradiación. Se contabilizaron 800 células/individuo, 200 por tratamiento, considerando su repetición. Posteriormente, se realizó ensayo in vivo con sangre periférica de dos mujeres, de condiciones similares a las anteriores, sometidas al consumo de extracto seco de arándanos durante 15 días consecutivos. El muestreo se realizó antes y después del tratamiento y se implementó el Cometa analizando 800 células/individuo, correspondientes al control negativo e irradiación con 4 Gy. Resultados: en ambas etapas, el tratamiento con arándanos demostró una reducción significativa (p<0,01) del daño genómico referido a las muestras irradiadas. Conclusiones: la suplementación dietaria con arándanos podría disminuir los efectos secundarios de la radioterapia, optimizando la calidad de vida del paciente oncológico.


Introduction: Numerous studies have analyzed the antioxidant capacity of blueberries. Considering the ionizing radiation cytotoxicity mediated by free radicals is imperative phytocompounds analysis with potential mitigating effect. Objective: To evaluate radio-protective properties of this fruit in relation to genetic damage induced by x-rays. Materials and methods: Experimental design had two stages. First an in vitro assay using 10 samples of peripheral blood of young and nonsmokers female. Each sample was analyzed by comet assay in the next set of treatments: negative control, treatment with blueberries (0,232 mG / mL), irradiation 4Gy and simultaneous blueberry/ irradiation treatment. Were counted 800 cells/individual, 200 per treatment, considering its repetition. Subsequently, an in vivo assay with peripheral blood of two women, of similar conditions and subject to the consumption of dried extract of blueberries for 15 consecutive days was performed. Sampling was performed before and after treatment and Comet was implemented by analyzing 800 cells / individual, corresponding to the negative control and irradiation with 4 Gy. Results: In both stages, treatment with blueberries showed a significant reduction (p <0.01) of genomic damage relative to irradiated samples. Conclusions: Dietary supplementation with blueberries may decrease the side effects of radiation therapy, optimizing the quality of life of cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

The chemical constituents of Vaccinium bracteatum were studied by means of macroporous resin, ODS column chromatography and preparative HPLC. Eleven compounds were isolated from this plant. By using ESI-MS and NMR, the structures of the eleven compounds were determined as 10-O-trans-p-coumaroyl-6alpha-hydroxyl-dihydromonotropein (1), 10-O-cis-p-coumaroyl -6alpha-hydroxyl-dihydromonotropein (2), vaccinoside (3), 10-O-cis-p-coumaroyl monotropein (4), isolariciresinol-9-O-beta-D-xyloside (5), tectoridin (6), vicenin-3 (7), quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnoside (8), quercetin-3-O-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside (9), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside (10), and quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucuronide (11), respectively. Compounds 1 and 2 are new, and compounds 4, 6 and 7 are isolated from the genus Vaccinium for the first time.

Data suggest that V. arctostaphylos, B. thunbergii var. atropurpurea, E. angustifolia and L. acanthodes may prevent gastric ulcers induced by Non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs]. To explore the ulcer-protective potential of these plants in indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in rats. Saline, hydro-alcoholic extract of each plant [100, 400, 800 mg/kg] and omeprazole [30 mg/kg] were gavaged to the groups of animals for 4 consecutive days. Gastric ulcers were induced by the onetime gavage of indomethacin [30 mg/kg, p.o.]. On the fifth day, each group was pretreated with physiological saline as control, extract [100, 400 or 800 mg/kg, p.o.] or omeprazole [30 mg/kg, p.o.] 30 min before the indomethacin administration. The animals were killed 6 h after the indomethacin administration. The stomachs were removed, opened along the greater curvature and washed in physiological saline. A person unaware of the type of treatment received by the animals examined the stomachs under a 3-fold magnifier. The areas and lengths of hemorrhagic lesions induced by indomethacin were measured using a dial caliper and the sum of measurements for each animal was referred to as the ulcer index. All extracts reduced the ulcer index significantly compared to the control group [p <0.05]. These plants prevent NSAID-induced gastric ulcers in rats. The efficacy and potency of the gastro-protective effect of L. acanthodes appears to be higher than the other 3 plants

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of Bog Bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) extract in eyes with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: Forty-four eyes of forty four patients with early AMD were included in this randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled study. All participants were randomly assigned to either the placebo group (n = 24), or the bog bilberry extract group (n = 20). Before drug administration, an ophthalmic examination which included slit lamp microscopy, best corrected visual acuity, and intraocular pressure was performed, and repeated 1and 3 months after treatment. Objective scatter index, glare and tear film break-up time were checked by Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS, Visiometrics, Spain) and drusen volume, central macular thickness, and RPE and IS/OS junction thickness were investigated with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (Spectralis, Heidelberg, Germany). RESULTS: In the bog bilberry extract group, RPE and IS/OS junction thickness was significantly increased compared to the placebo group after 3 months of drug administration. CONCLUSIONS: Bog Bilberry extract may play a favorable role in preventing the atrophic change of RPE and IS/OS junction layer and the progression of early macular degeneration.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the effect of Vaccinium uliginosum L., (VU) on the electroretinogram (ERG) and retinal pathological changes in rabbits after light-induced damage.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Twenty-eight Chinchilla rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: administration beforehand (A), administration after injury (B), light injury without administration (C), and blank (D) groups. After a 4-week administration of VU homogenate at 4.8 g/(kg·d) once a day in group A, ERG in groups A, B and C were recorded according to the standards set by the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV). Except for group D, the groups were then exposed to strong light. Just after that, group A stopped receiving VU treatment and group B started to receive it. Then ERGs in all groups were recorded after 1 day, 1 week, and 2 weeks. Throughout the whole process groups which were not fed with VU were fed with normal saline. Finally, the tissues and structures of all the groups were observed and the thickness of the outer nuclear layers (ONL) was measured.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>(1) After 4-week feeding with VU, the latency time of ERG in group A became shorter than those in the other groups and the amplitude increased. After being exposed to strong light, the latency time lengthened and amplitude decreased in all the injury groups, but comparing at each time point, the measured values in group A were better than those in group C. With the accumulation of VU, the ERG in group B improved, and finally, all of the detected values became better than those in group C. (2) Retinae in group D were normal in histology and the layers were in order but those in group C became disarranged. The injuries in groups A and B were minor compared with those in group C. The thickness of the ONL in group C was significantly thinner than in the other groups (P=0.000), and that in groups A and B was thicker than that in group C, although thinner than in group D. That in group A was thicker than in group B.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>VU can relieve the injury to rabbit retinae exposed to normal day and night rhythm, alleviate the harm caused by light when used beforehand, and repair the light damage to the retina.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To detect the effect and mechanism of procyanidin foom vaccinium (PC) on myocardial fibrosis in rats.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>The myocardial fibrosis model in rats was built by subcutaneous injection of 5 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) of isoprenaline (Iso) for 7 days in vivo while intragastrically administrating PC 100, 200 and 400 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) for 14 days. Following the model was established, myocardial indexes (heart weight/body weight, HW/BW and left ventricalar weight/body weight, LVW/BW) were measured. Besides, angiotensin II and I , III collagen quantification levels in blood serum were determined respectively by ELISA. The change in the content of nitric oxide (NO) in blood serum was determined with colorimetry. The content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in left ventricle was assayed with spectrophotometry. The contents of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK) in blood serum were detected with automatic biochemistry analyzer.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>Compared with the control group, the myocardial indexes, the contents of I , III collagen quantification, angiotensin II in blood serum and malondialdehyde in left ventricle were markedly increased and the content of nitric oxide in blood serum was decreased, the contents of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase in blood serum were markedly increased in Iso model group (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the myocardial indexes were decreased, the contents of I , III collagen quantification, angiotensin II in blood serum were reduced in PC 200 and 400 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The content of nitric oxide in blood serum was increased, the content of malondialdehyde in left ventricle was markedly decreased, the contents of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase in blood serum were markedly decreased in PC three groups (P<0.05 or P<0.01).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>PC could inhibit collagen synthesis by decreasing angiotensin II level and increasing the content of nitric oxide and antioxidation, and thereby inhibiting myocardial fibrosis and protect myocardium in rats.</p>

ABSTRACT

Vaccinium meridionale is a promising crop for the Andean region of South America and is currently available only in the wild. Spontaneous populations of this plant are found across the Colombian mountains, but very few published records on this plant morphology are available. A zonification study of V. meridionale was conducted in four principal areas of a low mountain forest of Colombia (Provinces of Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Santander and Nariño) in 2007. A total of 20 populations and 100 plants of V. meridionale were individually characterized and surveyed, using a list of 26 characters of morphological variables (9 quantitative and 17 qualitative characters). Our results indicated that natural populations of V. meridionale might be found in the tropical forest under a highly heterogeneous climate and microclimate conditions, at different mountain regions between 2 357 and 3 168masl. The shrubs of V. meridionale exhibited a high level of intra-population variation in several quantitative (plant height, stem diameter) and qualitative (growth habit, ramification density, presence of anthocyanins in stems) morphological characters, suggesting an environmentally induced phenotypic plasticity. Plant height, stem diameter and foliar density were the most variable morphological traits, with coefficients of variation higher than 50%. However, several quantitative characters of its reproductive potential, such as berry dimensions, rachis length and number of flowers per inflorescence, resulted with low plasticity with coefficients of variation lower than 30.2%, indicating that these characters were genetically determined. The highest correlation coefficients (p<0.05) resulted to be between fruit length and fruit width (0.90), leaf length and leaf width (0.78), plant height and stem diameter (0.60), and inflorescence length and flowers number per inflorescence (0.57). The results suggest that an important genetic resource exists for this species in the wild. Low variation in fruit size, which constitutes a target trait for plant breeders, could be useful for selection of cultivars of V. meridionale. The results of this study could also be applied in conservation programs aimed to protect these diverse populations in the mountain forests of Colombia. Rev. Biol. Trop. 59 (2): 569-583. Vaccinium meridionale es una planta promisoria para la región Andina de Sudamérica y está disponible actualmente sólo en forma silvestre. Las poblaciones espontáneas de esta planta se encuentran en las montañas colombianas y existen muy pocos reportes publicados respecto a su morfología. Se realizó un estudio de zonificación de V. meridionale en cuatro áreas principales de un bosque de baja montaña de Colombia (Provincias de Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Santander y Nariño) en 2007. Un total de 20 poblaciones y 100 plantas de V. meridionale fueron individualmente caracterizadas usando una lista de 26 descriptores de variables morfológicas (9 caracteres cuantitativos y 17 caracteres cualitativos). Nuestros resultados indicaron que las poblaciones naturales de V. meridionale podrían ser encontradas en el bosque tropical bajo unas condiciones de clima y microclima muy heterogéneas, en regiones de montaña diferentes entre 2 357 y 3 168masl. Los arbustos de V. meridionale presentaron un nivel alto de la variación intrapoblacional en varios caracteres morfológicos cuantitativos (altura de planta, diámetro de tallo) y cualitativos (hábito de crecimiento, densidad de ramificación, presencia de antocianinas en tallos), sugiriendo una plasticidad fenotípica ambientalmente inducida. La altura de planta, el diámetro de tallo y la densidad foliar fueron los rasgos morfológicos más variables, con coeficientes de variación superior al 50%. Sin embargo, varios caracteres cuantitativos de su potencial reproductivo, como dimensiones de baya, longitud de raquis y número de flores por inflorescencia, presentaron plasticidad baja con coeficientes de la variación inferior al 30.2%, indicando que estos caracteres fueron genéticamente determinados. Los coeficientes de correlación más altos (p<0.05) fueron para longitud de fruto y ancho de fruto (0.90), longitud de hoja y ancho de hoja (0.78), altura de planta y diámetro de tallo (0.60), y longitud de inflorescencia y número de flores por inflorescencia (0.57). Los resultados sugieren que en condiciones naturales existe un recurso genético importante para esta especie. La poca variación en el tamaño de fruto, puede ser útil para la selección de cultivares de V. meridionale y se constituye un rasgo objetivo para fitomejoradores. Los resultados de este estudio también pueden ser aplicados en programas de conservación para proteger estas poblaciones diversas en los bosques de montaña de Colombia.

Antecedentes: se revisó la fitoquímica del género Vaccinium (Ericaceae) Métodos: se consultaron las bases de datos: NAPRALERT y Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database y la literatura disponible. Resultados: se halló un elevado número de estudios y compuestos de 32 especies y 23 cultivares de algunas de ellas. Los metabolitos predominantes, principalmente en el fruto, fueron: benzenoides, flavonoides (cianidinas, hiperósido, epi-catequina y proantocianidinas) y fenilpropanoides. La distribución geográfica de los estudios indica que el elevado número de especies autóctonas de Latinoamérica, prácticamente no se ha investigado. Conclusiones: la potencialidad de compuestos biológicamente activos en este género representa un campo con probabilidades de éxito para la obtención de medicamentos herbarios o suplementos nutricionales.


Background: Phytochemistry of genus Vaccinium (Ericaceae) was reviewed. Methods: NAPRALERT and Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Database as well as available literature were accessed. Results: A great number of research studies and compounds of 32 species and 23 cultivars were found. Predominant metabolites -mainly in the fruit- were benzenoids, flavonoids (cyanidines, hyperoside, epi-cathequine and proanthocyanidines) and phenylpropanoids. Geographic distribution of research studies showed that a high number of indigenous Latin-American species has not yet been studied as part of a research work. Conclusions: The potential of biologically active compounds of this genus represents a likely successful field to develop herbal medicines or nutritional supplements.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the chemical constituents from the leaves of Vaccinium bracteatum.</p><p><b>METHOD</b>Many column chromatographic techniques were used for the isolation and separation of chemical constituents. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral analysis and chemical evidences.</p><p><b>RESULT</b>Twelve compounds were isolated from the plant, and they were identified as chrysoeriol (1), scopoletin (2), trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid (3), trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid ethyl ester (4), cafeic acid ethyl ester (5), beta-sitosterol (6), iuteolin (7), quercetin (8), esculetin (9), cafeic acid (10), isolariciresinol-9-O-beta-D-xyloside (11), 10-O-trans-p-coumaroylsandoside (12).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Compounds 4, 5, 11, 12 were isolated from the genus Vaccinium for the first time, and compounds 1, 2, 9, 10 were isolated from this plant for the first time.</p>

ABSTRACT

The current situation of plant extract in domestic and international market was analyzed in the paper. The quality control of 20 plant extracts which have reasonably good sales in USA market was compared and analyzed. The analysis of the quality control of six plant extracts indicated that there were two main reasons leading to the varied quality specifications among different suppliers. One reason was that the plant species utilized by different companies were different. The other reason was that the extraction processes were different among different production plants. Comparing with the significant international suppliers of plant extracts, the product quality of Chinese companies were not satisfactory. It was suggested that chromatography and chromatographic fingerprint techniques should be applied to improve the quality control standard of plant extract in our country.
